Spiced Apple Protein Waffles


As you must already know, or maybe figured out, I am a waffle person. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy a good pancake every now and then, but I much prefer waffles. Something about them are light and fluffy, while also being crispy on the exterior is perfect. I am so thankful that my sister gave me a waffle iron for Christmas. I practically use it every weekend!

I love trying out different waffle recipes and experimenting myself. This time, I was inspired by apple pie. Everyone loves apple pie; it’s a good meal ender to anything! These particularly waffles contain hemp and chia seeds, which are high in protein and also filled with essential omega-3 fats, which are heart healthy! Not only are these waffles delicious and good for you, they will leave you full for a while. Perfect for a weekend brunch!

Makes 6 waffles

  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup spelt flour
  • 1/2 cup hulled hemp seeds
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 and 1/2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 and 1/4 cup non dairy milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup apple sauce
  • 1/4 cup grapeseed oil
  • 1/2 an apple, diced (about 3/4 cup)


In a large bowl, combine flours, hemp seeds, chia seeds, baking powder and soda, coconut sugar, spices, and salt. Stir and set aside.

In a small bowl, combine the milk, oil, applesauce, and diced apple, and stir. Add the wet to the dry mixture and stir until well combined. Preheat waffle iron and grease. Use according to instructions.


Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup and you can spread some apple butter. You can even serve with some vanilla ice cream if you desire 😉 Delicious apple goodness. Enjoy!
